What is SEM (Search Engine Marketing)?

A Form of Online Marketing

So what is SEM? Search Engine Marketing (SEM) is a form of online marketing that seeks to promote websites by increasing their visibility within search engine results pages. This is done through site optimization; the amount a company pays to place their advertisement (pay per click / cost per click); and via paid inclusion.

Site Optimization is the process of improving the volume of traffic to a site/web page to increase the chance of attracting a visitor. This can be achieved through using both unpaid (blogs, frequent updates) and paid techniques (paid inclusion). Paid inclusion is where a search engine company charges a fee for the site to be included in their search index, typically this is combined with pay-per-page and pay-per-click fees.
